Laser Radial Youth World Championship - Lack of wind during first day
RIVA DEL GARDA, ITALY-(5-8-2003) Very high humidity combined with the hot weather that has covered most of Europe caused the afternoon thermal wind to prematurely die on Lake Garda.
The first race of the day started at 1 pm in a promising 10 to 12 knots and all four fleets completed their first race. However as the first fleet were only 400 metres from the finish in their second race the southerly wind died at the leeward end of the course as rain clouds built in the surrounding mountains.
The first fleet closed up and finished in a light westerly wind whilst the following fleet was shortened at the end of their second downwind.
The third fleet was abandoned and the start of the fourth fleet was postponed. Both these fleets will be sailed early in the morning on Wednesday.
In the completed race of the day Croatia continued their relentless march. Tonci Stipanovic maintained his overnight lead with a second place, a result equalled by Tonko Kuzmanic CRO who is now joined in equal second by Jean-Baptiste Bernaz from France who won his fleet race.
